What are the current rights on /var/lib/majordomo/lists/newlist? 
The error is telling you that the file is group writable and IIRC, for
security pruposes, should only be writable by owner and readable only by
group and other.  For example:

$ ls -al /usr/local/majordomo/lists/test
-rw-r--r-- 1 majordom mail 13 Oct  1  2007
/usr/local/majordomo/lists/test
